Coventry gas chamber protest - 04/20/2001
Defenders of Animals organized a protest against the use of the gas chamber at the Coventry Animal Shelter. The town has since agreed to have each animal examined by a veterinarian upon arrival, to make the shelter more accessible to the public, and to euthanize most animals by injection.

Unsafe spay clinic - 03/16/2001
The Providence Journal reported that the city of Woonsocket was taken to task for operating an unsafe spay clinic after one pet owner's cat died. Defenders of Animals reported that the discrepancies were numerous. Our organization supports safe clinics for the spaying of pets.

SPCA gas chamber protest - 03/04/2001
Fifty people protested the use of the gas chamber at the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Results: Many Rhode Islanders were shocked to find out that an SPCA was still using a gas chamber. Most SPCAs throughout the U.S. do not use the device.

Providence Animal Rescue League gas chamber protest - 03/10/2001
The Rescue League reported to the Providence Journal that it destroys 3,000 cats and dogs each year. More companion animals are destroyed in the gas chamber at the Providence Animal Rescue League than any other shelter in Rhode Island.

Result: The public is becoming aware that this shelter may not be the best option for turning in a pet.

Delta Airlines Boycott - 01/23/2001
After receiving USDA inspection reports and documented complaints of pets dying, which include federal charges that Delta Airlines violated the Animal Welfare Act, our organization called for a boycott of Delta. Numerous pets and wildlife have died on Delta flights over the years.
